Iran strikes Al Udeid Air Base; Patriot batteries intercept the salvo

On 23 June 2025 the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Aerospace Force launched a salvo of short- and medium-range ballistic missiles at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar in an operation Iranian state media designated Operation Annunciation of Victory (Bisharat al-Fath), in retaliation for the 22 June 2025 U.S. Operation Midnight Hammer strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.¹² The Al Udeid Air Base is the forward headquarters of U.S. Central Command and U.S. Air Forces Central, and hosts approximately 10,000 U.S. service members.³ The Qatar Civil Aviation Authority closed Qatari airspace by NOTAM shortly before the attack, after Iran transmitted advance warning of the imminent strike to Qatar through diplomatic channels; Iran also conveyed notice to the United States.⁴⁵ U.S. Central Command said U.S. Patriot air-defence batteries intercepted the inbound missiles, with Qatari air-defence forces participating; CENTCOM characterised one missile as following a “non-threatening trajectory” that was allowed to pass without engagement, and reported no U.S. casualties.⁶ Reporting on the precise missile count diverged: U.S., Qatari and Iranian statements placed the launches at between 14 and 19. President Trump on Truth Social described the strike as a “very weak response” and thanked Iran for “early notice.”⁷ Trump separately spoke by phone with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.⁸

1. Advance warning of a missile strike permits the target to posture air defence, evacuate personnel and shelter aircraft on the ramp. The pattern — advance warning, calibrated volume, no casualties — mirrors the 8 January 2020 IRGC missile strike on Al Asad Air Base in Iraq following the killing of Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani, in which Iran similarly telegraphed the strike and U.S. forces took shelter (110 U.S. service members later diagnosed with traumatic brain injuries; no fatalities).⁹

2. The intercepts were conducted by Patriot PAC-3 batteries. Interceptor inventory at the site is finite, and high-volume follow-on salvos can deplete it; the Missile Defense Agency has not publicly disclosed Al Udeid inventory levels.¹⁰¹¹

3. Iranian domestic framing characterised the strike as a victorious, calibrated response. The U.S. and Qatari characterisation of the strike as a calibrated retaliation rather than a sustained escalation, combined with Qatar’s active mediating role, opens a channel for further diplomatic engagement.¹²
