Charlie Kirk shot and killed at Utah Valley University

On 10 September 2025 at approximately 12:20 p.m. MDT, Charlie Kirk, founder of the conservative political organisation Turning Point USA, was shot and killed while addressing students from a tented stage during the “American Comeback Tour” event in an outdoor courtyard at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah.¹² A single shot was fired from a rooftop nearby; Kirk was struck in the neck and pronounced dead at a local hospital later that afternoon.³ Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Kash Patel said that the FBI had joined the Utah Department of Public Safety, the Utah Valley University Police Department and the Orem Police Department in the investigation; Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes said state authorities were “leaving no stone unturned” in the manhunt for the shooter, who had fled the scene.⁴⁵ President Donald J. Trump, in a Truth Social post late on 10 September 2025, described Kirk’s killing as an “assassination” and announced that federal flags would be flown at half-staff in mourning.⁶ As of the dateline, no suspect had been arrested and federal or state charging decisions had not been announced; subsequent events fall outside this dispatch.
